A perfect mix of wildlife and relaxation, this tour combines the amazing wildlife of the Serengeti National Park with the relaxing tropical paradise that is Zanzibar Island, and offers a great introduction to Tanzania.

Arriving in Nairobi we head south across the border to Arusha, gateway to the wildlife heart or Tanzania. From here we head out on a three day safari to the Serengeti National Park, making stops at the Ngorongoro crater, home to an unrivalled density or wildlife, and Olduvai Gorge, birth place of man. We also visit Lake Manyara and take the opportunity for plenty of game drives at each location.

After our wildlife experience we head towards the Zanzibar and the coast, via the mountain town of Lushoto, where there is a chance to do some walking through some spectacular mountain scenery. We spend the last three days of our tour relaxing on the tropical paradise that is Zanzibar Island. There is plenty to do including historic Stone Town, markets, spice tours, swimming, snorkelling or just a bit of sunbathing. We finish with a transfer back to Dar es Salaam for your flight home.

Important Note: the itinerary below is written with an optional Activity Package included. This optional payment covers what we consider highly recommended activities on the tour. Separating these activities out is designed to help people with differing budgets. If required, the Activity Package should be pre-purchased prior to your arrival to guarantee availability and to help your guides plan ahead to help the smooth running of the tour. Itinerary

DAY 1 : Travel to Arusha

The tour starts in Kenya’s capital city of Nairobi this morning before we travel across the border to the Tanzanian city of Arusha, where we’ll spend the night.
Travellers who have bought the optional Serengeti excursion upgrade package will be briefed by a local guide on the itinerary for the next four days.
We do recommend arriving a day earlier in Nairobi to help you settle in. If you need any help in arranging extra nights and airport transfers, we can assist.
Note – our Overland tours are offered with an optional ‘Activity Package’ which includes a set of activities and visits that we recommend but that are not included in the main tour price. The itinerary below is written with the Activity Package items included. Please check our website or contact us for more information and prices.

DAY 2 : Onwards to Karatu

We say goodbye to Karatu today and make our way towards the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater. We’ll spend the night in the Arushan district of Karatu, which is the ideal location from which to explore the plethora of wildlife around you.
Those who purchased the Serengeti excursion upgrade will be fetched this morning and will travel separately from the rest of the group for the next four days.

DAY 3 : Game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater

We have an early start to the day as we head out in a 4×4 game vehicle through the Ngorongoro Crater, which is estimated to be home to over 25,000 wild animals. Game viewing is excellent throughout the year in the Southern Serengeti and if you’re lucky enough to be travelling in February, you may see the wilderness migration in and around the area.
We make our way back to our accommodation in Karatu this afternoon, where we’ll spend the night.

DAY 4 : Cultural tour of Karatu

Today, your guide will take you out on a cultural tour of Karatu, where you’ll get a glimpse into the lives of the locals who call this region home.
You have the rest of the day free to relax or you can book an optional tour at the camp – but be sure to arrange this with your guide as soon as you arrive in Karatu.

DAY 5 : Travel back to Arusha

We leave Karatu today as we make our way back to Arusha, where you’ll once again meet up with your fellow travellers who booked the Serengeti excursion upgrade.
We’ll overnight in Arusha, as we spend the night sharing our Serengeti wildlife sightings that we experienced over the past few days.

DAY 6 : Full travel day to Bagamoyo

We drive south today towards the coastal town of Bagamoyo – the former capital of the German East Africa and is one of the most important trade ports along the East African coast.
Bagamoyo is situated north of Dar es Salaam and is the perfect place to relax and unwind after a long day of travelling.

DAY 7 : Onwards to Zanzibar

We leave Bagamoyo early today as we make our way to Dar es Salaam to board a ferry to Zanzibar. Once we arrive at the port, we will be transferred to Nungwi, situated in the northern region of the island.
Zanzibar is well-known for its spices and fragrances and later today, we get a chance to see how it’s made when visiting the spice farms of Kizambani and Kidichi.
Nungwi offers some of the best water-based activities in Zanzibar and there are is wide variety of optional activities to take advantage of during your time here. If you would like to book an optional activity, your guide will assist you.

DAY 8 : Free day in Nungwi

You have the day free to laze away on the beach or to enjoy the activities and attractions that Nungwi has to offer, which includes snorkelling, scuba diving, fishing or you can rent a scooter and explore the island.

DAY 9 : Exploring Stone Town

You have the morning free to explore Nungwi, before we head back to Zanzibar to explore Stone Town. Also known as Mji Mkongwe, Stone Town is the old part of Zanzibar City and was once an important destination on both the spice and slave trade routes.
We spend our final night in Zanzibar on the beaches of this beautiful port city.

DAY 10 : Travel to Dar es Salaam

We have time this morning to do some final exploring of Stone Town, learning about its rich history and unique architecture before we make our way back to Dar es Salaam via a ferry.
Note – Your tour will come to an end once you arrive into Dar es Salaam. We recommend that you book at least 1 more night post-tour rather than flying out this evening in case of any delays. We can help you in organising extra nights if required.

2020 Day 1 : Nairobi to Arusha
We start our tour today by leaving the bustling city of Nairobi and driving towards the Tanzanian border. Once we have completed all of our formal border checks, we cross over and head towards the buzzing hub of Arusha. Here, we will stop over for the night and those who purchased the optional Serengeti Excursion upgrade package will be briefed by our local guide. The guide will provide you with all the information you need to prepare for the coming days.

2020 Day 2 : Karatu
We spend most of our day travelling to Karatu, close to the famous Ngorongoro Crater. Once we arrive in Karatu, our experienced local guide will provide you with a full briefing on the exciting full day excursion into the Ngorongoro Crater tomorrow. Karatu also provides guests with the opportunity to participate in a wide selection of optional activities to choose from. Additionally, the guests who pre-purchased the Serengeti excursion will be picked up early today and separated from the group for the upcoming 4 days.

2020 Day 3 : Ngorongoro Crater Excursion
We’ll be picked up early from the camp this morning and transported to the Ngorongoro Crater in 4×4 safari vehicles. We will spend most of today along the crater floor exploring the diverse range of wildlife that frequent the plains. This is one of the world’s most famous wildlife hotspots and we’re sure to see a huge variety of big game animals, birds and other species. Arriving back in Karatu in the afternoon after an eventful day, guests are free to relax and reflect on the events of the day.

2020 Day 4 : Karatu tour and optional activities
This morning, your professional local guide will accompany you on a cultural tour of the town. You are then welcome to spend the rest of the day as you choose. Relax around the camp or choose to participate in the numerous optional activities that Karatu has to offer. (Guests will be required to book any optional activities with the accommodation upon arrival)

2020 Day 5 : Arusha
As we bid farewell to the Ngorongoro Crater, we board our truck and head back to Arusha with unforgettable memories. Our fellow travellers who departed for the Serengeti Excursion are reunited with the group upon arrival in Arusha.

2020 Day 6 : To the coastal town of Bagamoyo
Off to an early start, we begin our journey to our overnight accommodation on the sunny coast towards the town of Bagamoyo. The town of Bagamoyo lies north of the port of Dar es Salaam and was formerly known as the epicentre of the East African slave trade. The atmosphere of African travel envelopes us as we experience the hustle and bustle of one of Africa’s major travel routes. Taking in the buzzing markets and rural villages, we are able to take a glimpse into the window of African rural life. Our evening shall be spent relaxing and preparing for our exciting Zanzibar Excursion that begins tomorrow.

2020 Day 7 : Ferry to Zanzibar and visit Stone Town
Today, we step out early and begin our journey towards Dar es Salaam for a leisurely ferry ride to Zanzibar Island. Upon arrival, we make our way to the hotel and get a first-hand experience of all of the fragrant smells and sounds of Zanzibar. The beautiful town of Stone Town offers numerous excursions and activities, all of which can be arranged with assistance from your local guide.

Take the opportunity to create some unforgettable island memories, soaking up the beautiful weather.

We then board the ferry back to the port of Dar es Salaam where our tour comes to an end.
